O God! Do not let my lifespan become a pasture for the Devil

The world without the beloved appears dark and gloomy in the eyes of a true lover. The true lover detests everything that causes separation from their beloved.

Hawzah News Agency - Imam al-Sajjad (peace be upon him), in the twentieth supplication of Sahifa al-Sajjadiyyah, says:

«اللَّهُمَّ ... عَمِّرْني ما كانَ‌ عُمري‌ بِذْلَةً في طاعَتِكَ، فإذا كانَ عُمري مَرتَعاً لِلشَّيطانِ فَاقبِضْني إلَيكَ.»

"O God! ... Let me live as long as my life is a free gift in obeying you, but if my life should become a pasture for Satan, seize me to yourself."

Explanation:

A true lover cannot bear even a moment of separation from their beloved. They do not find the world appealing without their beloved. The world without the beloved appears dark and gloomy in the eyes of a true lover. The true lover detests everything that causes separation from their beloved.

In this beautiful prayer, Imam Zain al-Abidin (peace be upon him) teaches us the lesson of happiness in this way:

"O God! As long as I am with You, as long as I wear the garment of Your servitude and obedience, grant me the ability to live and breathe. But as soon as You see that my life has become a playground for Satan, take my soul. This is the ultimate limit of love and devotion.

But how can the life of a faithful person become a grazing ground for Satan?

What is certain is that Satan is always lurking and knows well how to behave and tempt each individual. One day, he distracts a person from their night prayers. The next day, he leads them away from performing prayers on time. Another day, he takes away the joy of prayer from them. Once he has taken prayer from them, he begins to pursue further steps; backbiting, neglecting parents, ignoring others' rights, and so on, until the faithful person realizes that all their possessions, all their existential treasures, and all the loving connections between them and their beloved have been lost. Their entire being has become devoid of light, turning into a playground for Satan.

For this reason, God says in the Quran:

«لَا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ إِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُبِينٌ.»

"Do not follow in Satan’s footsteps; he is indeed your manifest enemy." (Chapter An'am, Verse 142)
